If you buy a hand watch or wall clock as a holiday gift, you might want to attach this little note to explain how they tell us much more than just the time.

  • The first lesson that we learn is from the second hand. It goes, little by little, step by step. It eventually gets to the next big number but slowly and surely. We too grow in little increments, step after step. There is nothing to get frustrated about. This is just the way life is.
  • A watch always moves forward. It never goes from two o?clock to one o?clock. You too shouldn’t look back. You should go from one great accomplishment to another and then to another.
  • And what happens when the second, minute or hour hand gets to the number twelve? It doesn’t stop and say, ?Look how great I am! I got to the highest number on the watch face. Now I can rest and take it easy.? Rather it starts the whole cycle again and goes from the one, to the two, etc. You too, no matter how great your accomplishments are, strive to build on those feats and to do better and better.
  • What happens when the battery runs out? That’s right, you don’t throw the watch out or leave it in the drawer, never to be used again, but you replace it with new one. The same is with us, if things didn’t work out the way we wanted them to work out, don’t give up but “put in a new battery” and continue life.
  • When you put in the new battery, what happens then? The watch doesn?t cry or stay in bed saying how hard it was being without power or what a failure it was for stopping to work. It just continues to tick, just like it ticked when the old battery was still working. We also might have bad days or even longer periods of difficulties. When those times are over, though, we can’t dwell on the bitter past but we have to keep those events where they are, in the past, and make a great future for yourself.
  • The watch doesn’t “buckle under” to peer pressure. If a working watch is in a box with one hundred broken ones it won’t stop working because “all my friends are broken” but it will keep on working of the other’s failure.
